The world in which we live is constantly setting aside those things we hold dear and sacred. We are afraid to say anything because someone will take it wrong and put it on Facebook or we could lose our job. We are told to be politically correct so that we don’t offend anyone. Being politically correct is seen in many areas all around us. For instance, the Cleveland Major League Baseball team just changed their name from the Cleveland Indians to the Cleveland Guardians, they say for the purpose of being politically correct. I’m not sure I will ever get used to calling them the Cleveland Guardians. The things we hold sacred are also being pushed aside by a lack of respect. Things long held sacred are profaned and ridiculed.
There are those who would like to destroy the things we hold dear and call sacred. Even with the political correctness and the lack of respect for these sacred things in our lives it doesn’t change the fact that there are still some things that are sacred.
The Word of God is Still Sacred
The Bible is the most hated book that ever existed yet it still is the best-seller of all time. People buy the Bible but fail to read it. The lack of knowledge of what the Bible teaches is heart breaking. I read where a Yale student was asked about Golgotha and their response was Golgotha killed David. A few years back a questionnaire was given to 18,000 high school students in the Bible-belt. 16,000 couldn’t name three Old Testament prophets. 12,000 didn’t know the names of the four gospels and 10,000 couldn’t name three of the twelve disciples. The Word of God is sacred because:
- God was the author. II Timothy 3:16
- God breathed on those who wrote. I’m not sure who said it but I love the phrase: Common men wrote under uncommon inspiration. II Peter 1:21
- The Bible is eternal and will last forever. Matthew 24:35
The Home is Still Sacred
Some say the home is on its way out. Some recent statistics say differently and the home is making a comeback. The home was the first institution God created and in Genesis 1:25 God blesses the home. God blesses what is good and what God blesses is sacred. The home is worth the battle. I pray we create Godly homes and remember:
- A house is made of brick and wood. A home is made of hopes and dreams.
- A home is a place you grow up wanting to leave, and grow old wanting to go back home.
- There is no place like home.
The Church is Still Sacred
I love the church and I believe in the church. The New Testament church was founded by Jesus who said He would build His Church. The truth we find in the book of Acts is that the Holy Spirit is to fill the church. The Bible gives us three pictures of the Church.
- The Building: The place of worship and fellowship with others.
- The Bride: The Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, will return for His church-the Bride. This is all who have been redeemed and are a part of His church.
- The Body: We are the church. The Holy Spirit dwells within us and we are to be the church. The body has many parts and no part is any more important than the other. As the parts of the body work together in harmony as one the Holy Spirit will use us to build the Church.
Norman Vincent Peale made a statement about the church that I have found to be true. “The church is where all our hopes come true.” I realize the church can be frustrating at times but God blesses His church. The church is still as sacred today as it was when Jesus established it.
You Are Sacred
You and I are the creation of God and we have been created in the very image of God. He made us with an eternal soul and God considers us sacred. I know we are sacred because of what John 3:16-17 tells us: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” Hallelujah, we are sacred. Let us treat one another with love and care because we are sacred.
In the front of Boston’s Trinity Church there are two memorial statues. One is for Phillip Brooks who became the pastor of the church in 1869. The second statue is of Jesus who stands behind Brooks. The Savior’s hands rest on Brook’s shoulders. There are still things in this world that are still sacred because the hands of Jesus rest on them.
